Repairing Shares for OSX Catalina

Post upgrade of our Company Macbooks and iMac’s issues were occuring accessing both SMB and AFP Shares, the errors are somewhat obscure in regards which meant too much time was spent in order to find what became the most simple of fixes which is ultimately a permissions issue on the Volume.

If you experience the following MAC OSX Catalina share issues then read on..

SMB Error:

The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “someshare” can’t be found.

AFP Error:

The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator.

SMB/AFP Error:

The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “your_share_name” can’t be found

in order to resolve these issues its likely the permissions on the Volumes dir has been affected during the upgrade, so in order to rectify do the following:

  • Open terminal.app
  • execute the following command in terminal:
  • sudo chmod 775 /Volumes
  • sudo chgrp admin /Volumes

then relaunch finder by holding the option key (alt key) and right clicking the finder icon on the Dock, then selecting relaunch.
Finally recheck access to your shared volumes and everything should now be working as expected.
